Effects of seed morphology and orientation on secondary seed dispersal by wind

چکیده

Abstract Understanding how diaspore (hereafter ‘seed’) morphology and orientation affect secondary seed dispersal by wind is important to link post-dispersal processes, such as lodging, predation germination. This study aims describe the effects of on via mechanistic modelling. We extend model Schurr et al. (2005) in order affected conditions, ground surface, orientation. The simulates initial landing orientations, distances stopping orientations individual seeds. To parameterize model, we measured orientation-specific vertical projection lift-off velocity (the speed at which a starts moving ground) asymmetric seeds heterocarpous Zygophyllum xanthoxylon, determined parameters that depend properties and/or environment. validate conducted channel experiments released Z. xanthoxylon onto sand-coated tar paper, recorded extended could precisely predict distance, explain up 99% variation observed proportions stopped various orientations. predicts distance increases with decreases aerodynamic roughness length, there might be positive correlation between germination success.

Seed dispersal by neotropical seed predators.

From a plant's perspective, the difference between a seed predator and a seed disperser should be straightforward: attract animals that will disperse seeds and defend seeds from potential predators. Unlike pulp-eating frugivores, seed predators regularly encounter diverse plant protective mechanisms. The purpose of this paper is to examine feeding constraints, morphological adaptations, and the...

Mechanistic analytical models for long-distance seed dispersal by wind.

We introduce an analytical model, the Wald analytical long-distance dispersal (WALD) model, for estimating dispersal kernels of wind-dispersed seeds and their escape probability from the canopy. The model is based on simplifications to well-established three-dimensional Lagrangian stochastic approaches for turbulent scalar transport resulting in a two-parameter Wald (or inverse Gaussian) distri...

Uncoupling the Effects of Seed Predation and Seed Dispersal by Granivorous Ants on Plant Population Dynamics

Secondary seed dispersal is an important plant-animal interaction, which is central to understanding plant population and community dynamics. Very little information is still available on the effects of dispersal on plant demography and, particularly, for ant-seed dispersal interactions. As many other interactions, seed dispersal by animals involves costs (seed predation) and benefits (seed dis...

Effects of landscape corridors on seed dispersal by birds.

Habitat fragmentation threatens biodiversity by disrupting dispersal. The mechanisms and consequences of this disruption are controversial, primarily because most organisms are difficult to track. We examined the effect of habitat corridors on long-distance dispersal of seeds by birds, and tested whether small-scale (<20 meters) movements of birds could be scaled up to predict dispersal of seed...
